Podcast Video Recording Checklist: Before, During and After

October 9, 2026

A reliable podcast video recording runs on three short lists. Before you record, prepare the room, the gear and the guest. While you record, protect the audio and the pacing. Afterward, clean, check, export and archive the file. One sample episode below goes through every item.

The episode we will follow

A financial advisor hosts a monthly video podcast for clients. This month's guest is an estate attorney, and the topic is updating beneficiaries after a major life change. The episode goes out as a video and on an audio feed, and the advisor has one afternoon to finish it.

Before you record

Two days ahead, the advisor sends the guest a brief: the three main questions, the expected length, and a request to join from a quiet room with a wired headset or a dedicated microphone.

On the morning of the recording, the advisor gets the room ready:

  • Close the window and switch off any fan or air unit for the hour.
  • Set the camera at eye level with the main light in front of you.
  • Plug in the laptop and silence phone, email and calendar alerts.
  • Save the recording locally as an MP4 or MOV file if the platform allows it.
  • Say the opening line aloud twice before recording.
  • Record a ten-second test clip and play it back on headphones.

The test clip picks up a faint hum from a desk fan, so the advisor unplugs it. The free speaking-rate calculator helps here too: paste in the rehearsed intro and check whether it reads rushed.

While you record

The guest joins five minutes early, both sides confirm they can see and hear each other, and recording starts. This list protects the file, not the delivery:

  • Leave two seconds of quiet at the start and the end.
  • If you flub a line, pause and repeat the whole sentence. A clean restart is easier to handle later than a half-corrected phrase.
  • Note the rough time of any real mistake.
  • Avoid talking over the guest. Overlapping voices are hard to untangle afterward.
  • Let the ums go. Stopping to fix every filler word makes the guest self-conscious.

Partway through, the attorney says "you know" several times while explaining trusts. The advisor lets it go. Relaxed raw footage with some filler is better than a stiff, careful take, because filler can be removed afterward and stiffness cannot.

At the end, the advisor waits a few seconds in silence, stops recording and confirms where the file saved.

After you record

Most hosts lose the afternoon here, scrubbing a timeline for every pause and stumble. The checklist route is shorter:

  • Rename the file with the date and episode number.
  • Back it up to a second location.
  • Watch the first and last minute to confirm the audio and video stay in sync.
  • Run filler and silence cleanup, then review every cut against the transcript.
  • Export the video, plus the audio for the podcast feed.
  • Draft the title and show notes while the conversation is fresh.
  • Archive the final files somewhere permanent.

For the cleanup, the advisor uploads the raw footage to TrimTake. Our detection engine finds the ums, uhs and "you knows" with word-level precision and removes dead air. It also adds a short automatic audio crossfade at each cut so nothing clicks. Medium mode suits an interview where some natural pauses should stay, and Light and Aggressive modes are there for a gentler or tighter pass. The filler word removal page explains how detection works.

A completion email arrives with the link. The preview shows the transcript with every removed word struck through, plus stats for fillers removed and time saved. The advisor reads through the attorney's explanation of trusts and checks that each point still means what it meant.

That leaves the restarted sentence noted during recording. Automatic cleanup removes filler and silence, not repeated sentences, so that spot needs a human decision. On the Pro plan, XML/EDL export opens the cleaned cut in Premiere, Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve, where the repeat is quick to remove. Every plan also returns an audio-only MP3, so the feed version comes from the same pass.

Processed videos auto-delete after 14 days, so the advisor downloads the final files and stores them with the original raw footage.

Matching a plan to your publishing schedule

The Free plan lets you test the workflow on a trailer: clips up to 90 seconds each, about 10 minutes of footage a month, no card. Pay Per Video costs $0.99 per video for recordings up to 10 minutes, which suits short segments. Full episodes usually need a monthly plan. Starter at $9 covers about 2 hours of raw footage a month. Pro at $49 covers about 15 hours and adds the export option above. See pricing for details, and the podcasters page for the full podcast workflow.

The printable version

Before: brief the guest, quiet the room, put the camera at eye level, light from the front, turn off alerts, save locally, record a test clip.

During: leave quiet at both ends, restart full sentences, note the times of mistakes, avoid overlapping voices, let the filler go.

After: rename, back up, check sync, run cleanup, review the transcript, export the video and audio, write the show notes, archive within 14 days.

FAQ

What should I check before a podcast video recording?

Check the room for noise, put the camera at eye level with light in front of you, silence alerts, and set the recording to save locally. Then record a short test clip and listen back on headphones.

Should I stop and redo a line every time I say um?

No. Let filler words go during the conversation and remove them afterward. Only restart for real mistakes, and when you do, repeat the full sentence.

Can I get an audio file for my podcast feed from the same recording?

Yes. Every plan includes audio-only MP3 output, so the feed audio comes from the same pass as the video.

What file formats can I upload?

TrimTake accepts MP4, MOV, AVI and WebM files. Most recording platforms save in at least one of these.
